I, like many, had planned to return to the US on my second J1 to make Summer 2020 the best one yet, which safe to say is not happening now. However, let us not fret, as there will be more summers and better days in the future for us to enjoy.
In the meantime, I plan to share a little about my J1 experience, where I travelled on my own from Ireland and worked at a summer camp about two hours outside of New York City. I look forward to sharing the tips and tricks I learned along the way, which I had wished someone had told me before take-off. And being the avid planner that I am, I would grab a pen and paper because I am certain they will come in handy for your 2021 J1.
More than anything, I want to showcase how jetting off on a J1 on your own and working in camp will help you identify skills you never knew you had which is exactly what an employer wants to see. Since returning to Ireland, there has not been a job application form or interview where my experience in camp did not get a mention.
So I leave you with this video, a little taster of what I got up to last summer. And yes, that is Mariah Carey.
