The aim of this event is to engage further in-person and celebrate Green Week.

The main questions we’ll discuss are:

What is your research question?

How would you anchor enquiry on a farm?

What funding opportunities would be available to support your inquiry?

The creative edge we should explore and push together could be the following:

What questions can we ask together that we cannot investigate alone that would further elucidate the web of relationships embedded in land, food and health?

What can we learn from working together that would overcome the current limitations of our respective disciplines/practice?

What novel frameworks of understanding can we articulate by working between our disciplines/practice?

We’d love colleagues from across College to attend. Please feel free to share this invitation with anyone you think might be interested. Some of us are meeting for lunch in the Dining Hall beforehand from about 1pm.
Smart Cities, Wise Governance: Crafting Policies for Equitable Urban Development by Dr. Philip Lawton, School of Natural Sciences

Friday, 27 March 2026, 1 – 2pm

About the Event

As cities across the UK and beyond race to become "smarter" with digital technologies, from automated transport systems to data-driven public services, a new challenge has emerged: ensuring these innovations benefit everyone. While smart city technology promises greater efficiency and sustainability, its implementation often risks deepening existing social and economic inequalities.

Dr. Philip Lawton, a leading expert in urban development, will address this critical issue in his presentation. He will challenge the common "technology-first" approach and instead advocate for a model where governance and policy are the primary drivers of urban progress. This session is designed to move the conversation beyond what we can do with technology to what we should do for our citizens.

Dr. Lawton’s talk will explore:

The Governance Gap: Why a focus on technology alone is insufficient for creating equitable urban spaces. He will discuss how smart city initiatives, without wise governance, can lead to unequal access, data privacy issues, and the marginalisation of vulnerable communities.

Policy Frameworks for Equity: What specific policies and regulations can be put in place to ensure that smart city solutions serve all residents. This includes strategies for inclusive digital access, ethical data use, and community-led planning.

Community-Driven Strategies: The importance of involving citizens in the design and implementation of smart city projects. Dr. Lawton will highlight examples where participatory approaches have led to more relevant and equitable outcomes.

A Human-Centric Vision: How to shift the paradigm from technological integration to a model of urban development centred on human needs and well-being.

This webinar is a crucial component of E3’s "Balanced Solutions For A Better World" series, which showcases multidisciplinary approaches to complex global challenges. Dr. Lawton’s work exemplifies this by bridging technology, policy, and social justice to create smarter, fairer, and more resilient urban environments.

Who Should Attend?

This presentation is essential for anyone involved in shaping our urban future. This includes:

Policymakers and Government Officials: To understand how to craft regulations that ensure equitable technological implementation.

Urban Planners and Architects: To learn how to design cities that are both technologically advanced and socially just.

Technologists and Developers: To gain insight into the ethical implications of their work and the importance of human-centric design.

Community Advocates and Non-profit Leaders: To discover strategies for advocating for their communities' needs in the face of rapid urban change.

Students and Researchers: To gain a deeper understanding of the intersection of technology, urban studies, and social equity.

Join us to champion a vision of cities that are not just smart, but also wise, just, and truly inclusive.

Campus Location: Online
Accessibility: N/A
Summary: Are "smart" cities serving everyone? Join Dr. Philip Lawton and E3, Trinity College Dublin, for "Wise Governance." Learn how policies, not just technology, can create equitable, human-centric urban development that benefits all residents.
Event Category: Alumni, Classes, Conferences, Key dates, Lectures and Seminars, Public, Special events, Student events, Sustainability, Workshops and Training
Type of Event: One-time event
Audience: Clinical Teaching Staff, Public and Patient Involvement – PPI, Researchers, Retired Staff, Undergrad, Postgrad, Alumni, Faculty & Staff, Public
Contact Name: FREE
Contact Email: lynhamm@tcd.ie
More info: us02web.zoom.us…
