The Yeats Sisters and Irish Design

As shown in the exhibition ‘The Yeats Sisters and Irish Design’ the work of the Yeats sisters testifies to their remarkable contributions to art and design at home and abroad.

It is also an opportunity to visit the Printing House, the third oldest building on the campus of Trinity College Dublin. The building housed Ireland’s oldest printing and publishing house, Dublin University Press until 1976. The first publication of Dublin University Press was Plato’s Dialogues in 1738.

About Two Cent Collective

This project was facilitated by Two Cent Collective, comprising four members of the 2025-2026 cohort of Atlantic Fellows for Equity in Brain Health, baed at the Global Brain Health Institute. Coming from diverse professional and creative backgrounds, the collective shares a commitment to equity, access, and the role of creativity in supporting brain health.

Collective members include anGie seah, a multi-disciplinary artist from Singapore; Will Dean, a youth advocate and activist from Wales; Rohith Khanna Deivasigamani, a psychiatrist from India with an interest in creativity and the arts; and Colin Regan, a journalist/writer, former high performance athlete, and health promotion manager from Ireland.

'Time to Act' - Traveller and Roma Inclusion in our University Workshop

The purpose of the workshop is to start the conversation within our college, schools and units regarding Traveller and Roma inclusion and reflect on what has been done to date. The workshop aims to identify specific action initiatives that will incrementally improve the access, academic, support, and engagement needs of Traveller and/or Roma students at Trinity College Dublin. This workshop is organised by the PATH 5 project in Trinity Access Programmes, in partnership with the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (AHSS), and with support from the Trinity Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Office. This workshop is funded through the PATH 5 initiative, which aims to create infrastructure that facilitates increased participation of Traveller and Roma students in Higher Education.

The workshop is co-facilitated by Ciara McGarry Quinn, who is the Traveller & Roma Access Officer at Trinity College Dublin. Annmarie Collins, who is a doctoral researcher at Trinity College Dublin, is dedicated to promoting educational equality and cultural inclusion from primary to higher education, with a particular focus on supporting Irish Traveller students. Annmarie’s work involves developing cultural awareness workshops for staff, providing practical resources for inclusive classrooms, and supporting diverse educational environments. Alina Kostenko, who is a Roma writer and facilitator from Romania, working primarily with Roma and Traveller communities across Ireland, where she conducts trauma-informed, culturally sensitive poetry and creative writing workshops.

This session is particularly relevant for academic staff, professional staff supporting students, and administrative staff, though all interested staff are welcome. Please circulate this email to members of your team.

Trinity Love and Literature Evening Lecture Series 2026

Description

The author La Rochefoucauld once wrote that many people would never have fallen in love in their lives if they had never heard other people talk about love. And for centuries, it was literature, first and foremost, that talked to people about love: what love was, how it affected people, what its promises and dangers were, and how this strong affection should best be navigated. In some cases, literature also allowed lovers to bond in the first place, for example, quite notoriously, when young people read poems together. The lecture series will investigate the literary history of an intense and complicated feeling.

About this course:
Over the past decade, expectations of the skills and competencies of PhD graduates have changed significantly and have shifted towards an emphasis on both the research and the researcher as key ‘outputs’ of a PhD programme. In line with developments such as the European Research Competence Framework (https://research-and-innovation.ec.europa.eu/document/download/7da29338-37bf-4d51-b5eb-a1571b84c7ad_en?filename=ec_rtd_research-competence-presentation.pdf), doctoral candidates are expected to be able to demonstrate a multi-dimensional skillset that extends beyond their deep research understanding. Balancing these expectations against the responsibility of ensuring that research progresses successfully, without overloading PhD candidates with multiple competing demands can present real challenges for supervisors.

This session will focus on understanding these demands, the resources that are in place and the key supports that will be needed by supervisors and students.

Academy of the Near Future/ Smart Docklands is a smart communities education programme in partnership with CONNECTand Dublin City Council

‘The Connective Detective’ programme is a free, creative and engaging workshop series designed for 5th and 6th class primary school students in collaboration with Smart Docklands/ Connect Research Ireland Centre for Future Networks/ Dublin City Council. Through hands-on activities, they explore telecommunications, connectivity, and smart cities in a fun and interactive way. The programme runs since early 2024 and so far we have engaged with 16 schools and over 1000 participants in the wider Dublin area.

Green Week Grow College Green - DCC Consultation Event

Dublin City Council has published the latest design for Grow College Green. This flagship project reimagines the historic centre of Dublin city, right on the doorstep of Trinity College, creating a new space that is a destination for everyone.

The plans provide a high-quality public realm that can accommodate everyday activity, cultural events and social interaction while also providing moments of calm within the pace of daily city life. The vision is that it will not only be a place to shop, work, gather and celebrate, but also a space to pause, breathe and connect.

As a key city centre stakeholder, Dublin City Council is keen to hear the views of the Trinity College Community before it applies for planning this summer.

Green Week - Official Opening of the New Secure Bike Parking Unit at Trinity Centre for Health Sciences at St James Hospital

Researchers need people and resources for climate and nature projects. Citizens are looking for ways to meaningfully contribute to climate and nature issues.

How can we bring these two groups together with reduced friction and maximum impact?

In this session, we will explore ideas for proactive climate and nature engagement. What infrastructure can be put in place to streamline interactions between climate and nature scientists and the public?

This might include:

Citizen Science Mailing List – Individuals signed up to receive information about how they can offer their time to climate and nature projects.
Resource Hub – An inventory of resources that private citizens have offered up to be used by researchers (i.e. land, large-scale infrastructure)
Partner Hub – Organisations who have confirmed willingness to partner on climate and nature projects, listing their interests and the appropriate contact.

You may also have ideas you wish to share!

For much of my career, since working on The Ambiguous Allure of the West: Traces of the Colonial in Siam/Thailand (2010), I have focussed on how best to draw the study of Thai culture into dialogue with the world beyond its national borders. The linchpin of modern Thai national identity, as defined by the State, draws on a constructed characteristic of uniqueness – that Siam/Thailand was the only country in the region to have escaped colonial rule by the West. As a result of this self-styled politico-cultural superiority, Siam/Thailand is rendered incomparable to its neighbours. But in this, Thai Studies finds itself at an intellectual disadvantage: as Benedict Anderson provocatively encapsulates in his rhetorical question posed in 1978 on the state of Thai Studies: ““What damn good is this country—you can’t compare it with anything!” The ability to make comparisons between Thailand and other countries, between Thai culture and other cultures, is central, in my view, to making the study of Thailand resonate in the outside world. It is central to the intellectual agenda of making Thailand matter in the wider scheme of South East Asian studies, and of global academia. To this I should add, by way of emphasis, that I do not use the term ‘global academia’ as shorthand for ‘Western academia’. The study of Thai culture has the capacity to generate its own inter-Asian theoretical models beyond those of European thought,

This lecture explores how and why the study of Thai culture matters as a point of comparison with other cultures. To achieve this, I take as my primary cultural texts, the work of Thai short story writer, Sidaoruang; the horror film genre, with particular reference to Nang Nak; and the shaping of Thai national identity through photography in the early twentieth century.

Rachel Harrison is Professor of Thai Cultural Studies and Head of the Doctoral School at SOAS University of London. She has published widely on modern literature and cinema, gender, sexuality, and popular culture in Thailand, in addition to a focus on the cultural effects of Siam/Thailand’s post-coloniality in relation to the West. She is currently working on an interdisciplinary research project bringing on culture, well-being, and public health to dialogue with medical practice in Northeast Thailand. Her teaching focuses on the generation of cultural studies theory from the perspective of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. She is also the editor of the quarterly journal South East Asia Research.

Pablo Peña is an Associate Instructional Professor at the University of Chicago, where he has taught since 2019. He has over twenty years of experience in the public, private, and non-profit sectors. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago.

The event will take place on Tuesday, 10 March at 6.30pm in the Synge Theatre. Professor Peña will discuss human capital theory – the idea that investing in a person’s knowledge and skills has a wide range of economic effects.

He will also be presenting his new book Human Capital for Humans – a guide to understanding the science that has become synonymous with modern life and the economy. With an illustrative and immersive style, Peña unpacks the human capital approach to domains such as parenting, aging, marriage, health, and household labour. The result is not only intellectually elevated, but an essential introduction for learners and teachers of this subject across business, management, economics, policy, and beyond.

The Trinity Long Room Hub is delighted to announce the third instalment of the new seminar series, Bridging the Gap between Policy and Research, which explores how scholarship in the Arts and Humanities can shape and inform public policy for the common good.

Continuing our Bridging the Gap series, this session, hosted by Joe McHugh, will explore how academic research can be more effectively integrated into national policymaking processes, with a focus on building sustainable, evidence-based partnerships between higher education and the state. Drawing on insights from The Royal Irish Academy and The Irish Research Council’s paper Public Policy: A Road Map for Ireland, we will examine practical mechanisms—such as a potential Science Advice Mechanism or national policy platform—to enhance dialogue and collaboration between researchers and policymakers.
Key discussion points will include:
· The current disconnects between research outputs and policy implementation.
· Lessons from crisis-response models (e.g. COVID-19) where collaboration was immediate and highly effective.
· Institutional and systemic reforms needed to reward research with direct policy impact.
The goal is to identify feasible pathways and frameworks that could support universities and academic researchers in engaging more directly with the policymaking process.
Joe McHugh is a former Minister for Education and Skills and previously served as Chair of the Committee on European Union Affairs. During his time in public office, he held a number of senior ministerial roles and has been closely involved in European policy and governance at national level.

From Ballynascreena to Front Square: The Colonial Public Histories of the Trinity Estates and their Tenants

Trinity College Dublin was for over three hundred years one of Ireland's landowners owning 190,000 acres or 1.25 % of the island, including significant estates first granted as part of the Ulster and Munster plantations . These estates were home at their peak to over 71,000 people. They were the Trinity tenants. In this paper Patrick Walsh draws on the TCD institutional archive, estate papers, and his own family history to explore their history and contemporary legacies in Trinity's daily rituals and the Irish landscape.

Dr Patrick Walsh is Associate Professor of Eighteenth-Century History at TCD. Together with Dr Ciaran O'Neill he co-directs the Trinity Colonial Legacies Project. Patrick is currently writing a book on the state in eighteenth-century Ireland as well as a co-authored book with Mobeen Hussain and Ciaran O'Neill entitled Cultivating Virtue? Trinity's Colonial Legacies.

The Modern and Contemporary Irish History Seminar Series will take place at 2.30p.m. on Wednesday in the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts & Humanities Research Institute. You are warmly invited to attend Inclusive Research Practices: Intersectionality in Action, a half-day, in-person training for research-active staff at Trinity College Dublin, taking place on 12 March 2026, an event co-hosted by the Office of the Dean of Research and the Office of the Associate Vice Provost for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

Why this matters now

Major national and European funders increasingly assess how research is designed and conducted, not just what it studies. Horizon Europe, Research Ireland, and the Health Research Board now explicitly require applicants to demonstrate robust consideration of gender, equality, diversity, intersectionality. Weak or tokenistic approaches to inclusion can undermine otherwise strong proposals, raise ethical concerns, and affect impact assessments. This training equips researchers with the practical tools and language funders expect, strengthening proposal quality, credibility, and competitiveness across disciplines.

This practical and applied training is designed for researchers at all career stages, from postdoctoral researchers to professors, and across all disciplines. It focuses on how to embed inclusive, intersectional approaches throughout the research lifecycle, strengthening research quality, integrity, and societal impact.

Structured around the research lifecycle, the training will cover:

Understanding systemic inequities in research and the use of intersectionality as an analytical framework
Inclusive research design, including research questions, sampling, methodology, and ethics, with particular attention to the exclusion of small or marginalised populations
Community engagement and co-creation, distinguishing meaningful engagement from tokenism and building accountability
From insight to action, focusing on redesigning systems, protocols, funding calls, and dissemination practices to support sustained change

The training is delivered by Lucy Michael Research Training & Consultancy Ltd, which specializes in research with marginalised communities and has published over 60 research reports for clients including the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights, Higher Education Authority, Health Research Board, and Policing Authority of Ireland. LMRTC works extensively with Irish HEIs translating complex equality frameworks into actionable guidance.

'Activist Art, Censorship, and Latino USA': A Film Screening and Conversation with Renowned Chicano Director Jesús Salvador Treviño

Jesús Salvador Treviño’s 1971 documentary film América tropical tells the story of a controversial mural painted on a Los Angeles building in 1932 by Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros amid the emergence of the Mexican-American civil rights movement, the Chicano Movement. This mural’s statement against U.S. imperialism in Mexico and the treatment of Mexicans in the U.S. led it to be whitewashed over but a campaign to preserve it eventually led to the establishment of a cultural centre in Downtown Los Angeles to celebrate it.

The film interweaves interviews with Siqueiros with footage of the struggle of Chicanos to achieve civil rights in the United States in the 1970s. The issues it explores—censorship, racism and the power of activist art are as relevant today as they were when the film was made.

This event forms part of the Languages 250 at Trinity (1776-2026) programme and is supported by the Faculty Events Fund and the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies.

Lessons From the Sacred Heart: Life Writing, Then and Now

A guest lecture by Prof Carolyn Dever (Dartmouth College, USA) organised by the School of English.

When I was a child, my mother was certain that she and I shared a mind and so access to universes far beyond ordinary perception. Though I knew that wasn’t true, I had little choice: her psychosis was the place I encountered her, and the medium she used to express her love for me.

“Lessons from the Sacred Heart” revisits this story through the lens of my mother’s tragic entanglement with ideas about Ireland and Irish diasporic identities during the early 1980s, the symbol that burned brightest for her as the darkness fell.

Carolyn Dever is professor of English and creative writing at Dartmouth College. She is a 2025 Guggenheim Fellow for her memoir in progress, “Pretty Words Like Blades”: An Autobiography of My Mother, and author or editor of seven books, including Chains of Love and Beauty: The Diaries of Michael Field (Princeton, 2023).

LoGaCulture is an EU-funded research project creating innovative experiences for cultural heritage engagement. In the UK, the Universities of Bournemouth and Southampton have developed experiences for The Avebury Landscape and Avebury Stone Circle in collaboration with the National Trust; in Germany, the University of Applied Sciences in Rhein-Main have developed the “Museum for Tomorrow” in collaboration with the Senckenberg Museum; and in Portugal, the University of Lisbon have developed cultural heritage experiences for the Island of Madeira.

Inspired by the problem of noise in quantum systems, this transdisciplinary symposium aims to explore our understanding of noise across science, technology and the arts. The symposium opens questions concerning (quantum) technology and noise—with a view to articulate a speculative quantum policy that embraces nuance, complexity and multiplicity while learning from superposition and entanglement. What then are the scientific, technological, technical and energetic aspects of noise? Is noise opposed to information and individuation as something that needs to be kept at bay at all times? Something that slows down, or prevents, progress? Can we move beyond the idea of noise as only an aesthetic judgement? What is the role of noise in artistic cosmos-building? What can Arts and Humanities learn from cybernetics and communication theory insofar as (quantum) noise is concerned, and how can artistic interventions inspire philosophical and scientific-technological inquiries? What are political and ethical dimensions of quantum systems and noise? How can we articulate a critical, emancipatory and decolonial framework for using these technologies countering their dogmatic, reactionary, or elitist capture? How does noise relate to the allied concepts of chaos, contingency, indeterminacy, outside? Let’s make some noise

A lecture by Dr Myisa Eatman (Harvard University) for the International History Research Seminar Series.

This paper examines how Black Americans, civil rights organizations, and the Black press transformed their approach to challenging police brutality and white-on-Black violence from the 1930s through the early 1960s, shifting from individualized state tort litigation to collective federal civil rights claims. This legal evolution—from state-level torts to federal civil rights law—represented more than tactical adaptation; it reflected Black Americans' fundamental reconceptualization of their relationship to legal institutions and their claims to full citizenship under democratic governance.

The Centre for International History draws on the burgeoning insights of scholars in the past few decades that history does not stop at the border of the nation-state. International history explores comparative approaches and uncovers transnational flows of commerce, politics, culture, and ideas. The Centre's research seminars and public events will display these methods while examining historical developments across the globe especially in the late modern period.

Catholic Religious Sisters as accidental ethnographers: What a religious archive can tell us about rural Ireland in the 1940s and 1950s

Dr Brian Casey is Historian and Archives Manager for Dublin Cemeteries Trust, based at Glasnevin Cemetery. He has published extensively on the dynamics of agrarian radicalism, the land question and Catholicism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and is the author of Class and community in provincial Ireland, 1851-1914. Previously a Research Fellow in the Department of Theology and Religion at Durham University, he has published 'The Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood and provision of healthcare in provincial Ireland, 1942-1970' with the Historical Journal and is completing a monograph on the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood and global Catholicism.

The Modern and Contemporary Irish History Seminar Series will take place at 2.30p.m. on Wednesday in the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts & Humanities Research Institute. It provides a forum for discussion and dissemination of new ideas, perspectives, and research on Irish history, Irish Studies and cognate disciplines. All are welcome. The Annual Benedict Anderson Lecture

The Benedict Anderson Lecture is an annual event jointly hosted by Trinity College Dublin and University College Cork. The lecture series was established to honour the life and intellectual legacy of Benedict Anderson, one of the most influential political thinkers of the twentieth century and author of Imagined Communities — a work that transformed the study of nationalism and continues to shape scholarship across history, political science, sociology, anthropology, and postcolonial studies.

Conceived as a flagship intellectual occasion within the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, the Benedict Anderson Lecture brings to Dublin and Cork distinguished scholars and public intellectuals whose work engages with themes central to Anderson’s scholarship: nationalism and political imagination; print capitalism and modernity; Southeast Asia and global intellectual history; exile, identity, and belonging.

Although Anderson spent much of his academic career at Cornell University and conducted extensive research across Southeast Asia, he consistently identified as Irish. Yet his stature as a major Irish intellectual has not always been fully recognised at home. This lecture seeks to address that absence — not merely by commemorating his name, but by fostering the kind of rigorous, internationally engaged scholarship that he exemplified.

As a jointly hosted initiative, the Benedict Anderson Lecture reflects a shared commitment between Trinity and University College Cork to collaboration across institutions and disciplines. Alternating annually between Dublin and Cork, the series strengthens connections within Irish academia while remaining outward-looking and globally engaged.

In keeping with Anderson’s own commitments, particular attention is given to inviting scholars from Asia and from the Global South, ensuring that the lecture remains international in scope and grounded in the regions and perspectives that mattered most to him.

The establishment of this lecture marks not only a tribute to a great Irish scholar, but also a statement about the intellectual culture we seek to sustain: historically informed, globally connected, and attentive to the political and cultural forces that continue to shape our world.

For 2026, the Inaugural Benedict Anderson Lecture at Trinity is hosted by the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and organised by the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies.

Spectres of Empire: Irish and Mongol "Marginal Imperialists" and the Afterlives of Imperial Nations

The 2026 Benedict Anderson Lecture invites us to reflect on his enduring legacy, particularly his method of drawing unexpected parallels to unravel the fabric of nationalism and empire. This lecture takes up his concept of the ‘spectre of comparison’ but argues that its most potent form is as much in the colonial subject’s mirroring of a metropolis as in the phantom parallels between the internal fissures of empires themselves.

Through a comparative study of Irish soldiers in the British Empire and Mongol bannermen in the Qing Empire, this lecture develops the concept of the ‘marginal imperialist’. These were non-ruling peoples who were simultaneously agents of and hostages to imperial projects, their loyalties perpetually suspect. The 1859 Qing victory at Taku, rumoured in Britain to be the work of a rebellious Irish officer but actually led by the Mongol Prince Senggerinchin, perfectly crystallises this fraught dynamic.

Building on yet departing from Anderson, the lecture traces a dual process: how these marginal imperialists became disillusioned, leading their struggles for independence (Ireland in 1922, Mongolia in 1911), and yet how their imperial entanglements made complete territorial sovereignty an impossible ideal. The enduring divisions of Northern Ireland and Inner Mongolia stand as testament to this ‘imperial hangover’.

In honouring Benedict Anderson, we must do more than simply use his tools; we must sharpen them and forge new ones. If his 'spectre of comparison' explains how nations are imagined through a vertical gaze across empires, then the 'phantom parallel' of the Irish and Mongol experiences reveals a lateral haunting within them. This forces us to recognise that the end of empire did not bring pure national sovereignty, but what we might call 'spectral sovereignty'—a condition where the nation-state remains haunted by the ghostly, unresolved borders of its imperial past. It is this haunting, from Belfast to Hohhot, that continues to challenge the imperial nationalism of both London and Beijing, and it is this phantom that our comparative gaze makes visible.

About the speaker

Prof. Uradyn E. Bulag is a leading scholar of China and Inner Asia whose work examines how Mongols have sought to shape their identity and assert sovereignty amid communist and nationalist revolutions, ideological and cultural transformation, and episodes of state-orchestrated violence. Drawing on Mongols’ complex history of both imperial expansion and colonial subjugation, his research engages broad theoretical and empirical questions relating to nation-building, sovereignty, settler colonialism, genocide, minority governance in multinational states, diplomacy, and international relations. A historical and political anthropologist, Bulag combines deep local and regional scholarship with national and global perspectives, bringing anthropological insight to urgent contemporary political issues.

The lecture series is supported by Perry Anderson, who has generously endorsed the initiative and given permission for the series to be named in honour of his brother, Benedict Anderson.

Embodied Practice Workshop: Ecology, Embodiment and Entanglements

The Department of Drama is inviting you to explore ecology through the lens of embodiment and the collective in a 3-hour workshop with Martha Cosgrove and David Alves. How do our senses attune us to our everyday environments? How do our bodies connect us to histories and narratives that matter to how we live now? How do we tell a story about ecology where our individual stories entangle with our local surroundings and beyond?

Drawing on eco-performance practices, this workshop invites participants to embrace their identities and ground in their space to weave connections through the senses. It will engage with memory, lineage and communication to reimagine how we live within fragile ecosystems. Our endeavour is to activate conversations, feelings and sensations to investigate how a diverse community of learning and research can develop a shared language towards sustainable living.

This workshop does not require any prior experience in performance; rather, we seek to share our methodologies and experience and learn from yours. This is a free event, but booking is required, and the number of participants is limited.

The workshop is organised as a satellite event of Green Week and the module “Staying with the Trouble: Ecology and Performance” (designed and taught by Céline Thobois-Gupta) to celebrate the launch of the Department of Drama’s first module on ecology and the spring equinox.

Martha Cosgrove is a theatre facilitator, maker and manager. She has a passion for ecological art and for engaging communities in environmental themes through sensory, embodied and participatory work. She is a core artist on the environmental arts programme We Are Nature Protecting Itself delivered by Tallaght Community Arts. She is a frequent facilitator with SoloSIRENs theatre company, co-facilitating the company’s primary school workshop series on anti-racism and interculturalism, and also regularly facilitates with Freshly Ground Theatre. Martha graduated with First Class Honours Degree from Drama and Theatre Studies in Trinity College Dublin in 2025.

David Alves is a theatre artist working through devised performance, movement, and embodied research. Their practice is rooted in the rehearsal room and in live encounter, and they create work that emerges from the body’s relationship to space, material, and environment. They are particularly committed to developing physical and site-responsive theatrical languages that explore Afro-Indigenous and queer identities, and belonging beyond text-led forms. David is currently a recipient of ITI’s Six in the Attic residency, after being a member of Weft Studio with Dublin Fringe, and they have also undertaken a Coiscéim residency.

James Harpur, Visiting Writer (Poetry and Non-Fiction) and Research Associate of The Trinity Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies, will present ‘Saturday Salon, Coffee and Culture’, a series of eight illustrated talks on the works, lives and influences of poets, saints and mystics and related themes. Each talk will last for about 45-50 minutes, with time for questions. They will be aimed not only at scholars but at anyone interested in poetry, art, spirituality, imagination and ultimate truth. Talk 5: ‘The Wind Bloweth Where It Listeth’: waiting for divine guidance through the spirit, oracles and dreams.

In this illustrated talk James reflects on the idea of being open to divine guidance, whether in the case of the early Christian Irish monks who sailed off into the ocean in boats without oars, letting the wind guide them to the ‘right place’; or through artistic inspiration, arriving, perhaps, in the form of a dream, oracle or voice from the dead. He also asks whether right actions in daily life and acts of creativity are best achieved by becoming still and alert – listening and waiting like Aeolian harps, instruments that were played by the wind.

About the series: This annual series of talks explores cultural, religious and historical themes in the spirit of the research interests of the TCMRS and the guest lecturer. The series is named after the Elizabethan polymath, Dr John Dee, mathematician, classical scholar, astronomer, astrologer, navigator, alchemist and magician, who became an adviser of Elizabeth I (founder of Trinity College) and bridged the worlds of Medieval and Renaissance thought. He was also a bibliophile and scholar whose personal library was said to be the largest private collection of books in England.

About the speaker: James Harpur read Classics and English Literature at Trinity College, Cambridge, and has published ten books of poetry, including his latest, The Magic Theatre, The Gospel of Gargoyle and A Place Where Ireland Is Invisible. His awards include the British National Poetry Competition and the Michael Hartnett Prize. His debut novel, The Pathless Country, won the JG Farrell Award and was shortlisted for the John McGahern Prize. His translations include the poems of Boethius (Fortune’s Prisoner, Anvil Press 2007) and ongoing work on the poems of Pierre de Ronsard. He is a member of Aosdána, the Irish academy of the arts, and a Fellow of the Temenos Academy, London. He lives in West Cork.

Each semester, the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultural Studies hosts a Research Seminar Series, giving colleagues a platform to share and discuss their current research. This seminar will be presented by Conor Daly (Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies).

Irish essayist Hubert Butler (1900-1991) is perhaps best known for the inclusive concept of Irishness articulated in his 1963 essay ‘Wolfe Tone and the Common Name of Irishman’, with its quasi-mystical emphasis on the importance of neighbourliness and diversity. This paper assesses the extent to which Russian writers, notably Chekhov and Tolstoy, contributed to the humanistic world-view which infused Butler’s life and work.

The 'Languages 250 at Trinity (1776-2026)' programme of events marks the 250th anniversary of the establishment of Modern Languages in Trinity College Dublin.

Writing the history of the Irish encounter with modernity

Enda Delaney is a Professor at the University of Edinburgh, where he holds a Chair in Modern History, and is the Director of Research at the Edinburgh Futures Institute (2024-26). His most recent book Making Ireland Modern:The Transformation of Society and Culture (Oxford,2025) explores how what might be termed a ‘cognitive revolution’ occurred in modern Ireland. His previous research focused on population and migration, as well as the Great Famine. He has been at the forefront of transnational and global approaches to Irish history and is an editor of the Reappraisals in Irish History Series by Liverpool University Press.

The Modern and Contemporary Irish History Seminar Series will take place at 2.30p.m. on Wednesday in the Trinity Long Room Hub Arts & Humanities Research Institute. It provides a forum for discussion and dissemination of new ideas, perspectives, and research on Irish history, Irish Studies and cognate disciplines. All are welcome. Inaugural Lecture of Professor Catherine Comiskey

Professor Catherine Comiskey is a Professor of Healthcare Modelling, Global Addiction and Transformation at Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin. She holds a BA(Mod) and a MA in Mathematics and Philosophy from Trinity College Dublin and a MSc and PhD in biostatistics, biomathematics and epidemiology from Dublin City University. She was elected as a Fellow of Trinity College in March 2020. She was appointed as the Academic Director of the CHARM-EU Project (CHallenge driven Accessible, Research led, Mobile, European University) (https://www.charm-eu.eu/node/1) in October 2020 and held the Chair of the International Academic Board and Academic Director of the Master’s Program on Global Challenges for Sustainability for three years from 2020 to 2023.

She is the former Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery 2014-2017, Acting Head from Oct 2019-March 2020, Director of Research from 2008-2012 and Inaugural Director of the Trinity Centre for Practice and Healthcare Innovation 2012-2014. Her research is in epidemiology and addiction. She is a current member and the former Chair and Vice Chair of the Scientific Committee of the EUDA (European Union Drugs Agency). She is an invited expert to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, World Drug Report and a consultant to the International Narcotics Control Board. Nationally. She is the former ministerial appointed academic expert to the Irish National Drug Strategy Implementation Committee and served on the board of the Ana Liffey Drug Project for eight years from 2017 to 2025.

Catherine is the sole author of the book, Addiction Debates, Hot Topics for Policy and Practice, published by Sage UK in 2020 and sole author of, Addiction Research and Evaluation, Addressing Key Challenges in Policy and Practice, published by Springer, New York in 2024. She is also the author of over 200 research papers.

Catherine has held visiting professorial positions across a number South African universities working in a capacity development role with emerging scholars. This work has inspired her third book, an edited collection with Dr Elizabeth Curtis. It will be published in 2026 by Springer and is titled, Capacity Development and Distributed Leadership in Tertiary Education: Transforming Global Healthcare, Research, Policy and Practice.

Catherine holds awards for innovation, for research and for education and is passionate about bringing scholarly excellence and evidence to her work. She is inspired daily by her wider group of senior research fellows, Post-docs, PhD candidates, students and colleagues. On a personal note, she has both a rural Co Wexford and a Dublin upbringing and is from a family of four siblings, Paul, Geraldine, Anthony and Les. She is married to architect Peter Carroll and they have a son, Seán and three daughters, Shannon, Julia and Molly.

From Troy to Ireland: an ancient object connecting worlds

In 2024, the Weingreen Museum of Biblical Antiquities at Trinity College Dublin was gifted a spindle whorl from the ancient city of Troy. Given by the early excavator of the site, Heinrich Schleimann, to Lady Augusta Gregory when she visited Athens in 1880, this decorated spindle whorl then made its journey to Ireland.
Lady Gregory mentions it in her diary and wrote an identifying note which remains attached to the back of the whorl. This small terracotta object, dating from the Bronze Age, connects us not just to the historical worlds of ancient Anatolia and Greece and the universal experiences of humanity reflected in the Homeric epic but also to the daily lives of women who would have used this object in their production of textiles, and, in more modern times, to the European excavators obsessed with these legendary tales and to the woman who brought it to Ireland.
We invite you to join us for two events (booking required for the Friday symposium, but not the public lecture on Thursday evening.
